BELFAST, September 6, 2021. ANGOKA Ltd, a leader in the field of hardware-based cyber-security, has adapted its solution for the real-time monitoring of major components such as EV batteries, transmissions and motors. While the continuous monitoring of propulsion systems has long been common in both commercial aircraft and, of course Formula 1 TM, it has previously been too expensive for mainstream automotive.
Angoka has addressed this problem, by developing a hardware-based security solution. This has three advantages:
It is intrinsically more secure than relying on software alone. It is more cost-effective because the hardware collaboratively creates passwords in real-time. That removes the need to periodically load new passwords to maintain security. It is widely applicable, because it provides trusted communications in an untrusted network. The key advantage for automotive customers is the almost complete elimination of Opex costs, as there are no software keys that require periodic updating. There is no trade-off in terms of security with this approach – in fact, quite the reverse. Because the passwords are being created by the hardware in real-time, it is more secure than a software approach, which has much longer periods between changes of passwords. As the devices collaborate to authenticate their communications, it does not matter if the network being used is itself insecure.
Shadi Razak, CTO of Angoka, said, “By fitting low-cost Angoka hardware elements in both the unit to be monitored, and at the Tier One or OEM HQ, the day-to-day performance of the unit can be tracked continuously. This opens up new opportunities for preventative maintenance, performance optimisation and the whole-life data required for the coming circular economy. We believe our proven technology can make a major contribution to improving vehicle performance.”
